Letter to My Future Self

Dear Self,

Akysha, We both know how this usually goes, no over-the-top praise, no dramatic speeches, and definitely no sugarcoated “I’m proud of you” lines. That’s just not us. But for the record, you did well. Better than you expected, actually, and that matters. You set the bar low on purpose, like always, to avoid disappointment, and somehow still managed to go beyond it. That says something, even if you’d rather not dwell on it.

This year, you showed up more than you give yourself credit for. Your schoolwork wasn’t just “done,” it was solid, consistent, and at times even impressive. You won’t admit that easily, but it’s true. And yes, being as critical as you are, it’s obvious you could’ve pushed further; you always can. That part of you isn’t going anywhere. Still, what you’ve done is enough. More than enough, actually. You stayed true to yourself, even with all the second-guessing and quiet pressure. That counts for something. So take it as it is: not perfect, not extraordinary in your own eyes, but real, and good.
